Welcome to the World of Hardware Wallet Security
Congratulations on choosing the Trezor wallet® — a hardware wallet designed to keep your cryptocurrencies safe from hacks, malware, and online threats. In this guide, you'll learn how to properly start up, secure, and begin using your device.
Your Trezor wallet® offers cold storage, meaning your private keys stay offline — out of reach from hackers or viruses. Let’s walk you through the correct steps.
Why Choose Trezor?
Trezor is a pioneer in crypto security, offering open-source hardware and software wallets that prioritize user control. Your Trezor device is designed to give you full ownership of your crypto assets, while reducing risk from online vulnerabilities.
- Offline key storage: Keeps your private keys isolated.
- Device-screen verification: All actions must be confirmed on-device.
- Recovery with seed phrase: You control backup and restoration.
- Compatibility: Works with Bitcoin, Ethereum, ERC-20 tokens, and more.
What You’ll Need
- A Trezor wallet® device (Model One or Model T)
- USB cable that came with the device
- Computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
- Secure internet connection (avoid public Wi-Fi)
- Pen and the included recovery seed card (or metal backup plate)
- Quiet environment without distractions or cameras
Step 1: Inspect Your Device
Before you plug in your Trezor, ensure the packaging is intact and untampered. Each Trezor device comes sealed. If the seal is broken or missing, do not proceed — contact support immediately.
Step 2: Connect and Open Trezor Suite
Using the included USB cable, connect your Trezor device to your computer.
Then, in your browser, visit https://trezor.io/start. You’ll be directed to download the official Trezor Suite software — your secure interface for managing the device and your assets.

Step 3: Install Firmware
When you first plug in your Trezor, it may not have firmware installed. This is by design — to prevent tampering. Trezor Suite will prompt you to install the latest official firmware. Follow the on-screen steps and confirm actions on the Trezor screen.
Step 4: Create a New Wallet
After firmware installation, select "Create New Wallet" in Trezor Suite. The device will generate a brand-new wallet with a unique recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase). This phrase is the only way to recover your wallet if your device is lost or damaged.
Write Down Your Recovery Phrase
Your Trezor will display 12 or 24 words — one at a time. Write them down in order on the recovery card. Do not take photos. Do not save it on a computer. Store it securely.
Step 5: Set a PIN Code
Next, you’ll be prompted to create a PIN. This protects your device from unauthorized physical access. The PIN is entered using a randomized grid, making it hard to guess even if someone watches you.
PIN Best Practices
- Use at least 6 digits
- Avoid easy combinations (like 123456)
- Don’t write your PIN near your recovery card
Step 6: Accessing and Using Your Wallet
After setting up your wallet and PIN, you’ll be directed into Trezor Suite. Here you can:
- Check balances
- Send and receive transactions
- Enable advanced features (like passphrases)
- Manage multiple crypto accounts
Before receiving funds, always verify the receiving address on your Trezor device screen. This ensures it hasn't been altered by malware.
Step 7: Sending Your First Transaction
To try your new wallet, send a small amount of crypto to your receive address. Confirm the address on the device, and wait for the transaction to appear in Trezor Suite.
Transaction Tips
- Always send a test amount first
- Use recommended fee settings to avoid delays
- Keep backup confirmations from the blockchain
Advanced Features
Enable Passphrase Protection
Advanced users may enable a passphrase (an extra word or phrase that acts as a “wallet within a wallet”). If someone gets your recovery phrase but not your passphrase, they canno
